KV terminal construction update - Hafen Straubing-Sand

About the construction project:

The ground-breaking ceremony for our combined transport terminal (CT terminal for short) at the port of Straubing-Sand took place in May of this year. Up to ten trains per week are expected to be served on an area of around 50,000 square metres from the second quarter of 2025. The new terminal will enable containers and swap bodies to be transferred from road to rail, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent. The new freight terminal is being funded by the German Federal Railway Authority to the tune of 79 per cent of the total investment.

In times of driver shortages and disrupted supply chains, the need for improved transport flexibility is becoming increasingly apparent. For this reason, the site at the port of Straubing-Sand will also offer storage capacity for up to 1,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit / 20-foot container). The new freight station aims to increase the attractiveness of the region for future company relocations and to offer existing companies a sustainable transport solution.

Current construction progress:

Construction work on the new CT terminal has been progressing well since the ground-breaking ceremony. The access road to the terminal is currently being built, including the necessary sewer, water and cable connections. At the same time, the implementation planning for the terminal area is being driven forward. This includes the construction of the surface, clarification of the AwSV (Ordinance on Installations for the Handling of Substances Hazardous to Water) and the planning of the lighting.

In addition, test drillings for the extinguishing water wells are currently taking place and a comprehensive fire protection report is being prepared. Progress is also being made in the area of the railway infrastructure: The earth formation for the track access to the harbour is being constructed and the terminal’s road exit has been successfully built.

The realisation of the terminal also includes the renewal of the rainwater clarifier at the harbour quay. There are also plans to start building the railway connection to the south quay at the end of October.
